How to make game music

Four steps from idea to loopable track.

Describe the moment, pick the sound, set the loop and sync it to your footage.

  1. Describe the game and the moment

Name the genre, the scene and what the player feels: a tense cave crawl, a sunny first level, a last stand.

  2. Pick the sound

Choose chiptune, orchestral, synthwave or lo-fi, then the instruments that lead, from square-wave leads to taiko drums.

  3. Set tempo, length and loop

Choose the BPM, how long the cue runs and a seamless loop point, so the track repeats without a seam.

  4. Generate, sync and export

Lay the track under your gameplay clip, check the loop against the action and export.

Level select

Same footage. Four different games.

Switch the score while the clip runs and hear the moment change.

Game music prompt anatomy

What a good game music prompt names.

  • Game genre and scene: a dungeon crawl, a boss arena, a farm at dawn
  • Mood: tense, hopeful, cozy, menacing
  • Instruments: square-wave lead, noise drums, strings, taiko
  • BPM: the tempo the action needs
  • Loop length and a seamless end, so the track repeats without a seam

The assembled prompt

All five parts in one line: scene, mood, instruments, tempo and loop. Send it as it is or swap any part.
