How to make an explainer

Four beats every great explainer follows.

  1. 01

    Hook the problem

Open on one person and one pain, inside five seconds. Tip: name both in the first line of your prompt.

  2. Macro close-up, the camera glides slowly along a row of four coloured sticky notes on a matte white wall, each with a simple hand-drawn dot-and-arrow doodle, shallow depth of field, the nearest note t

    02

    Show the solution

Say what it is and who it is for, in one sentence. Tip: cut every other claim from the prompt.

  3. Locked-off static shot of an open laptop on a matte white desk, its screen showing a flat-colour animation of a coral circle rolling between two mint squares, lit by a large softbox 45 degrees camera-

    03

    Walk through how it works

Three shots: input, action, result. Tip: write one prompt per shot so each one stays clear.

  4. Dolly in toward a young woman in a rust sweater at a studio desk, seen from the side, pressing a final yellow sticky note onto a pencil storyboard, strong golden window sunlight from the side, crisp n

    04

    End on one action

Close on the product and a single line, not a list. Tip: ask for one call to action and nothing after it.

Explainer styles

Six explainer styles that work, frame by frame.

01 Whiteboard

Here is the problem, drawn in three lines.

Works because the viewer watches the idea build, one stroke at a time.

02 2D flat

Your parcel, tracked from click to doorstep.

Works because clean shapes and one small story keep a process easy to follow.

03 3D product

Every curve, before you buy.

Works because a slow close-up lets the product make the argument.

04 Screen recording

Set up your account in two clicks.

Works because the viewer sees the exact steps they will take themselves.

05 Kinetic type

One sentence, said loud.

Works because moving words carry a single message, even with the sound off.

06 Live-action host

I tried it so you do not have to.

Works because a human face makes the pitch feel like advice from a friend.

Explainer video questions

An explainer video is a short film that makes one idea clear: it states the problem, shows the solution, walks through how it works and ends on one action. Most land at about 60 seconds. Go shorter for one feature, longer only when there are real steps to show.

Pick the style that shows your idea fastest. Whiteboard suits services, 2D flat suits apps, 3D suits physical products, and screen recording suits software with a clear flow. If you are unsure, describe the idea and let the agent propose one.

Yes. You can bring your own voiceover or generate a narration, and add subtitles on top. Add your logo to the closing shot, so the last frame carries your name and one action.
